61 years ago today, in 1961 the Antarctic Treaty, reserving Antarctica for free and nonpolitical scientific study, entered into full force. A 1991 agreement imposed a ban on mineral exploitation for 50 years.

Today showcasing 10 stunning images of Antarctic beauty by Julieanne Kost.

Antarctica, is the fifth largest continent on Earth, and lies concentrically around the South Pole. Its landmass is almost wholly covered by a vast ice sheet averaging 6,500 ft (2,000 m) thick. It is divided into two subcontinents: East Antarctica, consisting mainly of a high, ice-covered plateau, and West Antarctica, consisting largely of an archipelago of mountainous islands covered with ice. Its land area is about 5.5 million sq mi (14.2 million sq km).

The ice sheet overlaying the continent represents about 90% of the world’s glacial ice. By far the coldest continent, it has the world’s lowest recorded temperature, −128.6 °F (−89.2 °C), measured in 1983. The climate supports only a small community of land plants, but the rich offshore food supply sustains penguins, aquatic mammals, and immense seabird rookeries.
