Julian Cox & Neal Broffman

The opening event of Bronx Boys: Storytelling with a Lens, was a special morning of conversation and reflection celebrating the life and work of photographers Morton Broffman and Jules Aarons. The program began at 10:00 AM with bagels and coffee, followed by a 10:30 AM lecture with audience Q&A and gallery tour.

Bob Yellowlees introduced Julian Cox, Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Art Gallery of Ontario, and Neal Broffman, filmmaker and son of Morton Broffman. Cox, who first became familiar with Broffman’s work while serving as Curator of Photography at the High Museum of Art, will discuss the exhibition and the street photography of Aarons and Broffman. Together with Neal Broffman, he will offer an in-depth exploration of Broffman’s life and legacy.

This exhibition features two photographers with a gift for recording history with insight and purpose.

Much in common…born in The Bronx to Jewish immigrant parents, college educated, U.S. Army veterans, teachers and masters of photography. That, and a deep interest in, and compassion for, people.

Yet different: their career direction, the subjects of their work, geographic emphasis, and editorial perspective. One a scientific researcher ; the other a professional photographer.

Through their photography, Aarons and Broffman recorded important elements of history in the 1940s and the next four decades. In each case, excellent photographic images comparable to the best of photographers that inspired them: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dorothea Lange, Helen Levitt, Walker Evans, and Berenice Abbott.
