The Color of Light
This exhibition underscores the magic of light.
Photographs by: Wynn Bullock, Al Weber & Laura Noel
This exhibition underscores the magic of light.
The photographers’ works span three fourths of a Century. The nature of their images vary. So, too, do their perspectives and points of emphasis.
From Wynn Bullock – whose interest in the visual arts began in Paris in 1929 – to Al Weber, whose artistic work paralleled his position as a highly successful commercial photographer as well as teacher of, and mentor to, other photographers… to Laura Noel, whose views reflect insights on 21st Century urban life and her finely honed eye.
Bullock, known for his innovative, creative images was an explorer of the qualities of light… from light drawings to photograms to solarization. He was fascinated with the endless possibilities of light as a living form and force in its own right rather than simply as an “illuminator” representing objects as they are normally perceived. His most recognized images are in black and white. Yet, he executed this important color work in the early 60’s. Prints are being shown for the first time in this exhibition. He has had numerous showings of his work from New York, Chicago and San Francisco to Tokyo, London and Paris.
Weber’s images chosen for this show, illustrate the wide diversity of his color photography. The aerial impressions have an elegance that only nature can provide. His “Rock Art” uses the canvas upon which early Americans expressed their artistic feelings, while his black and white prints underscore the excellence of his photographic and printing technique. Weber’s images have been shown in over 200 exhibitions.
Throughout Laura Noel’s 15 years in photography, she has used color imagery to examine the American cultural landscape and national identity. In her recent body of work, Love and Rockets, she explores the way symbols of might and romance are used in commerce and in the public space to emphasize what is valued in America – power, strength, individualism, destiny, and the importance of the frontier. Her photography has been shown in over 50 group and individual exhibitions and is held in private and public collections.
Featured in this exhibition is the work of three photographers.
