The Story of a Winery – Rare Vintage Photography by: Ansel Adams & Pirkle Jones
Ansel Adams and Pirkle Jones were asked by Paul Masson Vineyards to do a series on all aspects of wine making at the time that new cellars, designed by John Bolles, were being built. They felt the old winery, with its 1852 Romanesque façade and the beautiful Saratoga vineyards, contrasting with modern architecture and methods would create an interesting essay. A story of one of the oldest art forms… the nurturing of the grape and creation of wine.
The resulting images are interpretive. They bring out nature’s bounty, the challenge of the production of wine and the human commitment to excellence essential to it. Likewise, each of the photographs was produced with the skill and years of experience of two master photographers. The photographs are elegant selenium toned vintage silver gelatin prints.
Featured in this exhibition is the work of Ansel Adams & Pirkle Jones.
