ROBERT WEINGARTEN: PALETTE SERIES
Robert Weingarten’s diverse portfolio is unified by his continuous fascination with the effect of light on color.
In the Palette Series of large scale photographs, Weingarten turns his attention to the color palettes of some of the most celebrated artists working today. Subjects include Chuck Close, Eric Fischl, Jasper Johns, Laura Owens
and Ed Ruscha. A smaller subset of this work, Artifacts, is also included in the exhibition.
These details of artists’ working environments transform the scale of the original scenes into one of chromatic drama.
Palette Series was on view at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. from July through October 2006. It is a continuation of Weingarten’s ongoing exploration of light and color as seen in his 2003 6:30 AM Series. There, Weingarten produced a collection that exposed nature’s infinite palette and powerful variability.
Other color photographs include his Landscape as Symphony, images of European and American landscapes.
He has also completed important work in black and white photography. In Another America, his photographs of Amish communities capture the beauty and simplicity of a way of life sustained over three centuries.
Robert Weingarten was born and raised in New York City. He served as Chairman of several financial institutions. At the age of 54 he decided to commit his energies to photography, his life-long passion.
Weingarten’s photographs have been included in over 50 exhibitions worldwide. His work is included in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, High Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, George Eastman House, Corcoran Gallery of Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art.

Robert Weingarten (1941) At the age of 54 he decided to become fully committed to his photographic art. His Landscapes often showcase repetitive natural form and magnificent hues. The 6:30 AM series, for which Weingarten photographed the same view during the year 2003 from his home in Malibu, Calif., is a perfect example of this style. The 6:30 AM series was featured in a 2005 book of the same title, published by Hatje Cantz, which was Weingarten’s third photography book in two years. The series displays his ability to evoke a sense of natural superiority reminiscent of the Hudson River School painters while exhibiting an Impressionistic sensibility.
Weingarten’s work has been featured in more than 80 exhibitions worldwide, most of them solo exhibitions. He has earned the distinction Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society (FRPS) Bath, England, and his images are in the permanent collections of 30 museums, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), Whitney Museum of American Arts, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution, National Gallery of Australia, George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, and the High Museum of Art. Numerous exhibitions in the United States and Europe have been complemented by six books of his photographs.
