Geoffrey Peckham – Edward Weston selections
Provenance
–
These prints were acquired by the gallery’s owner for his own collection from the Weston family over a dozen years ago. Others were acquired directly from a family in Monterrey, CA who were friends of Edward Weston.
They fit into three categories:
– Prints that are signed by Edward Weston (either by EW using his full name or initials)
– Prints – on grey mounting board (3) and loose prints (2) produced under Edward’s supervision by Brett & Cole in the 1950’s.
– Edward negatives printed by his son, Cole (EW/CW)
Notable elements are:
– The Carlos Merida is one of EW’s most iconic portraits and is reflective of the skill that he developed early in his career as a portrait photographer. It is a particularly elegant object.
– The very sensual image of shifting sand from The Oceano Series, of course, is one of Weston’s most important. The printing of the image in this portfolio was supervised by EW. A comparable signed print was sold for just under $120,000 last year.
– The banana bunch is from a series of only 10 negatives made of this subject in June 1930. He had tried several years earlier to capture them, as they and shells were amongst his favorite objects… and returned to them to capture this and the others-prints of which are not often available.
– Since nudes were among his favorite subjects, the series of Charis at Oceano are among the most important. An similar posed image from this series, signed by EW, sold for over $300,000 last year.
– The four EW images printed by Cole Weston offer a strong representative grouping from this subset. They were produced by Cole to his father’s standards.
